Stump the Hump |
1st Feburary 2013 |
Stump or be Stumped?
Stump the Hump is a 24hr walking event aimed at endurance sportspeople and adventurous trampers. Stump the Hump challenges you to walk the entire 55km of the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track in a single day. Starting from Rarakau at midnight on Friday 3 February, trek over sandy beaches and through ancient podocarp forest reaching the subalpine Okaka Lodge in time for hot porridge and to watch dawn break over the Takitimu Mountains, Stewart Island and the Southern Ocean. Walk down the Hump Ridge as the sun rises, through untouched beech forest and across historic viaducts, arriving at Port Craig in time for lunch. Finish with a Saturday afternoon stroll through native forest to Bluecliffs Beach.
Stump the Hump is not a race: it is a chance to experience a day in the life of the track.
Stump the Hump is unique in New Zealand. No similar overnight endurance walking events of its kind exist. Stump the Hump is not just another Routeburn Classic or Kepler Challenge that appeals solely to the running community. It is a unique, all inclusive, endurance walking event designed for adventurous individuals from all sporting backgrounds. The opportunity to hike overnight and watch dawn rise over the Southern Seas will, for many people, be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Cost: $120pp

The Kepler Challenge
This unique, ultra marathon event has been stage annually since 1988.
Recognised as a popular event within running circles, entrants are attracted from around New Zealand and overseas.
Following the Kepler track the run traverses contrasting terrain, from bush clad river valleys to barren mountain peaks.
The total distance is 60 kilometres, which includes an ascent of 1200 metres up Mount Luxmore.
The event serves two groups - the elite ultra marathon runners and the individuals running for personal challenge.

The Luxmore Grunt
Held in conjunction with the Kepler Challenge, this 28 kilometre run climbs the 1000 metres to Luxmore Hut before returning to the start point at the Te Anau control gates.
This demanding course zigzags the steep slopes of Mount Luxmore and includes alpine tussock fields and the beech forest along the shores of Lake Te Anau.

Te Anau Harness Street Race |
Date to be advised |
|
Te Anau is not commonly associated with harness racing – in fact it doesn’t even have a racetrack, however, for one day a year, Mokonui street of the town will be closed to motor traffic and two lanes of sand will be laid for the famed Te Anau Harness Street Race. The event involves considerable commitment and effort from the community and sponsors. Trainers and horses travel from throughout Southland for this unique event.
After the final race, an auction will be held in Lions Park, where punters can spend their Fiordland pounds from their day’s winnings to bid for an assortment of prizes.

Milford Mountain Classic |
Date to be advised |
The Milford Mountain Classic event is a tough race. At 120kms including the two major climbs, it is probably more like the equivalent an 150km race.
Starting at sea level it climbs to 620 metres over the first 18kms, than steepens to climb an additional 320 metres in the next 3 kms – including the 1.2km through the Homer Tunnel; to the high point at the Eastern Portal of the Homer Tunnel. Note: this is an average rate of climb of around 11% over this last section!.
A further steady climb is from the Hollyford turnoff to “The Divide” – an 150 metre gain in 3.5kms.
