Map of Fiordland Region
This map depicts the Fiordland region, including main highways and townships.
High mountains that are part of the Southern Alps form a barrier between the resort town of Queenstown and the scenic icon of Milford Sound - the only road access to Milford travels via Te Anau.
A key factor that visitors need to take into account is that distances can be very deceptive in terms of the time it takes to travel within this region.
The geographic forces that shaped the landscape and created such spectacular scenery also created challenges for engineers in making roads and access ways.
Road often traverse windy and steep terrain that makes for slow travelling making the time it takes to travel distances in miles or kilometres much longer than you would think. Add to this the fact that places like Milford Sound attract a range of coach and campervan traffic that want to travel slowly and take in the views. There are not many opportunities to safely overtake slower vehicles so travellers should always plan to allow a lot of time, and to slow down in order to relax enjoy the journey.
