There is a range of accommodation options in Te Anau and Manapouri to ensure visitors a comfortable stay within their budget range.
The definitions below provide a broad description of various accommodation categories. It should be noted that the properties included have selected categories by “self assessment”, and so the definitions cannot be strictly applied to every property, but are to be used as a guide only.
Definition of Accommodation Types
In most instances the emphasis is on budget accommodation and the opportunity to share experiences with fellow travellers. These offer mixture of shared rooms (or dormitories), which may be single sexed or mixed. Double, twin or single rooms are also generally available. Linen is not generally a standard part of the tariff for a room as it assumes that visitors have sleeping bags, however linen can usually be hired at an additional cost. Facilities such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundries are usually shared, although private bathrooms are sometimes available.
The Guest & Hosted category includes Bed & Breakfasts, Farm stays and Home stays, guest houses, boutique lodges, inns, country hotels and similar establishments providing "home-like" or "character" accommodation. There's normally emphasis on the personal interaction between the guest and the host.
Kitchen/cooking facilities are not usually provided, although depending on the style of the property, bedrooms may include tea and coffee making facilities, TV and a phone. Lounge facilities are usually shared with the hosts and/or other guests. Bathrooms may be ensuite, private or shared. Breakfasts are a feature and are usually part of an all-inclusive tariff. In more remote areas, other meals may be provided on request.
Sometimes also referred to as motor camps, these offer a range of accommodation from tent sites, backpacker style accommodation, motels units or tourist flats. They generally have central shared facilities for showers, toilets, cooking and laundry and often recreational facilities to view television or play games. Tourist flats are fully self-contained with TV, kitchen, bathroom and generally have separate bedrooms. Sheets and blankets are included or made available for hire. Motels have beds made up ready to use on arrival with linen included as part of the tariff.
Hotels have restaurant and bar facilities on the premises, rooms generally have phone, TV, toilet and bath/shower facilities and usually have tea/coffee making facilities within rooms.
The word lodge is often used to describe a range of accommodation types eg backpacker lodge, however for the purposes of this website, the Lodge section lists top class properties which offer dining and restaurant facilities on the premises and carry a full on-licence. These properties offer a very high standard of accommodation as well as professional guides available for local activities.
This includes Motels, Self Contained Cottages, and Holiday Homes. Most have self-catering facilities as well as phone, TV, and private bathroom/shower and toilet facilities; plus tea/coffee making facilities. Car parking is usually provided close by your room. Tariffs are generally set on a single double rate with minimum charges for additional adults or children. Bedding and linen is provided in most instances.
