Wildlife & Nature

Fiordland's geological background has created a range of flora and fauna that is entirely unique to this region. Our coastal, marine, valley and alpine environments are host to a diverse range of plant and animal species, from the cheeky Kea and playful dolphins, to the rare and endemic Takahe.

If you wish to use any of the photographs or imagery within this site, please contact the Destination Fiordland office via email info@fiordland.org.nz to request permission, clearly stating the Ref No. of the image you are wishing to use and we will be able to advise if there are any copyright issues involved with the images you stipulated.

Underwater World

Fiordland has a range of plant species from alpine herb fields, rainforests, and tussocklands, all easily accesible from the roadside or on any of the walking tracks within the region.

The isolation and dramatic Fiordland landscape is home to many species which are very rare and now have the only wild populations found in remote parts of Fiordland. Of course there are also the more common and darn right gregarious characters such as the cheeky Kea and a range of species in between.

The Underwater world of Fiordland has been separated out of the Flora and Fauna Wildlife sections to highlight what is a unique and sometimes other worldly part of Fiordland
