Sustainable Tourism South

The Sustainable Tourism South project came about as part of a government initiative to deliver on the promises of the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2010.

The Strategy noted that: 'the natural environment is fundamental to the New Zealand brand' and set the challenge of having: 'operators and organisations recognising the value of the natural environment and actively protecting, supporting and promoting its sustainability as part of what they do'.

The project is a joint venture between Destination Fiordland and Venture Southland to assist tourism businesses to develop and impliment action plans for environmental sustainability.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is meeting the needs of business today taking into account its needs for the future.

Southland Tourism Businesses are reliant on the environment to attract visitors, so it makes sense to look after it for the future.

Clients, staff and investors are becoming more interested in how businesses impact on the environment and society. Through the Sustainable Tourism South project businesses adopt the principals of the Southland Charter and take steps towards future proofing their business.

As we realise that the world's resources are not infinite sustainable business practices will become essential and people will look at what businesses are doing within the environment and community.
