With 1.2 million hectares of national park that spans from coastal to alpine environments, there are a range of opportunities to view nature at its best.

• Choose from any of the short or multiday walks, Key Summit, Lake Marion and the Lake Gunn nature walk are excellent short walks on the Milford Road
• Heli hike to Mt Luxmoore or Hump Ridge tracks to maximise the views and get a great down hill walk that traverses alpine tussocks to lowland forests
• Take a guided excursion with any of the local guiding companies to really get an appreciation of the local flora, fauna, history and tall tales
• Try sea kayaking to get the best close up views of nature on the fiords
• Visit the Department of Conservation visitors centre for excellent displays about the local area
• Get close up views of many rare native birds at the Te Anau Wildlife Centre
• Cruise Milford or Doubtful Sound to see dolphins and seals, and Fiordland Crested penguins at certain times of the year
• Wake up to bird song on Lake Te Anau, Milford or Doubtful Sound on an overnight cruise
