Once described as "the finest walk in the world", the Milford Track is one of New Zealand's most popular walks.

The Milford Track can be undertaken as a Guided Walk or independently with Guided Walkers staying in separate huts and having a slightly more 'luxurious' experience. In both instances however visitors planning to walk the track should book a long way in advance as numbers are limited and spaces fill quickly!

The descriptions that follow below apply to independent walking options, please contact Milford Track Guided Walks (from the activities section of this website), if you would like more details of the Guided walk option.

Track Description

There are three Department of Conservation huts along the track through two dense rainforest valleys and over an alpine pass. The Milford Track starts at the head of Lake Te Anau and finishes in Milford Sound. The track may only be walked in one direction, Glade Wharf to Milford Sound, during the booked walking season (late October to late April), with a maximum of 40 independent walkers permitted to start the track each day.

Track Length

53.5 kilometres

Duration

4 day/3 night walk

Season

Huts must be pre-booked between late October and late April (summer season). Outside the summer season, huts are available to use but are not serviced.

Access

Walking the Milford Track requires bus or private transport to Te Anau Downs, then a boat to Glade Wharf.
Boat transport is also required from Sandlfy Point, at the end of the track, to Milford Sound. Transport can be booked through the Department of Conservation. Guided Tour Options - Day Guided are available.

Notes

  • Bookings are essential. Bookings can be made online www.doc.govt.nz or at the Te Anau Department of Conservation office.
  • Track may be impassable due to snow/ice or avalanche danger during the winter and spring season.
  • Outside the summer season, huts are available to use but are not serviced.
  • During the summer season there are resident Track Rangers, cold running water in huts, gas for cooking, lighting, heating and flush toilets.
Bunkrooms are communal. Mattresses are provided.
  • Walkers must supply all food, cooking utensils, eating utensils, sleeping bags and warm clothing. During the summer season, this trip is a 4 days/3 nights package from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound. The descent from the MacKinnon Pass to the Arthur Valley and Quintin Hut is quite steep and rocky.
  • No camping permitted.

Hut Capacity

Maximum of 40 people per day. Restricted by booking system for those walking the track during late October to late April. Prior booking is essential - bookings open 1 July for the following summer. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Hut Fees

The Milford Track is a Great Walk. Huts cost $40 per person per night.
