The road is fully sealed, but the 119 kilometres from Te Anau to Milford takes a minimum of two hours driving without allowing for stops.
The road is occasionally closed from Marion Corner due to adverse weather conditions especially in winter, however the road is well maintained and carefully monitored during periods of heavy snow.
Drivers must note that all vehicles on the Milford Road are required by law to carry chains for their vehicles over winter months.
