- There are 2 main routes between Dunedin, Te Anau and Manapouri.
- SH 1 travels inland across rural hinterland that takes in townships Balclutha, Gore, Lumsden and Mossburn. The travelling time for this journey is 4 hours 15 minutes.
- The Southern Scenic Route links Dunedin with Invercargill via the Catlins, and the continues from Invercargill to Te Anau.
- We do not recommend attempting this drive in one day because the road, while sealed and well maintained, has many interesting stopping points as ell as being quite windy.

Dunedin to Taieri Mouth - 45 minutes
Taieri Mouth to Balclutha - 1 hour
Balclutha to Owaka - 30 minutes
Owaka to Papatowai - 30 minutes
Papatowai to Waikawa - 1 hour
Waikawa to Invercargill - 1 hour 45 minutes
Invercargill to Riverton - 40 minutes
Riverton to Tuatapere - 50 minutes
Tuatapere to Te Anau - 1 hour 30 minutes
