Milford Sound is approximately 19 kilometres in length from the fiord 'head' to St Anne Point at the fiord entrance.
Most boat cruises depart from Freshwater Basin and then complete a circuit along the Southern side of the fiord (under spectacular Mitre peak) and out to the entrance, before turning around and travelling back down the northern shore including an up close view of Stirling Falls.
The sheer sea cliffs at Milford Sound are spectacular, but also means that there is not a great deal of flat land on which to build. Visitors need to be aware that there are limited facilities within Milford itself aside from the boat departure terminal at Freshwater basin, the carpark, one cafe and bar, and one backpackers lodge, there are few other facilities.
