Milford Sound Voted #1 Destination in the World by TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel community, announced on 29 April 2008 the winners of its 2008 Travelers' Choice Destinations Awards. The Awards honour the world's top destinations, earning their distinction from those who know them best - real travelers. The winners were determined by a combination of TripAdvisor's travelers' favourite places and overall popularity on TripAdvisor. "Whether it's for their unique beauty, or abundance of attractions, the 2008 Traverlers' Choice Destinations Awards honour the most beloved destinations from around the world," said Michele Perry, vice president of global communications for TripAdvisor. "Determined by millions of travelers, the Awards are unique because they single out not just popular places, but truly exceptional places that enthrall travelers and keep them coming back."

Mitre Peak and Milford Sound were followed by Doubtful Sound in the No.2 spot, and the Bay of Islands at No.3 as the Must Do’s For Kiwis. Doubtful Sound received a final ranking of 8.876 out of ten. The Fiordland National Park Great Walks came in at No.4 in the rankings. It is truly one of our country’s most special locations and I am delighted it has been voted the top Must Do experience.”

Lonely Planet
Fiordland - "Spectacular Fiordland is a raw wilderness area sliced by numerous deeply recessed sounds that reach like crooked fingers into the Tasman Sea."
"Milford Track makes tentative inroads into the wilds, as do kayaking and boat trips along the sounds, and it's through such excursions that you come to appreciate the true immensity and beauty of Fiordland."
Milford Sound - "Gliding over calm waters between sheer, weather-scuffed cliffs, and catching sight of the spectacular 1692m high Mitre Peak in the distance, is a captivating experience that drives home the uniqueness of this corner of the world."
Doubtful Sound- "Fortunately, Doubtful Sound remains exquisitely peaceful and still feels entirely remote. While a continual debate rages amongst travellers as to which sound is better, cliff-hemmed Milford or the larger, less-trafficked Doubtful, it's like comparing kea with kaka."

And there is a great truth about travel: regardless of the weather (which no human has any control over) you will do your darndest to have a great time. I did."
