Te Anau is New Zealand’s number one tramping town

Outdoor lovers have voted Fiordland’s gateway town Te Anau as the place they’d most like to up sticks and move to.  More than 1000 Wilderness readers voted for the best place in New Zealand to live if you love tramping and the great outdoors.

Te Anau racked up 40% of the total vote, with Nelson coming second and Wanaka third. The leading North Island town was Taupo, which came seventh.

Wilderness editor Alistair Hall said Te Anau is a deserved winner due to the spectacular tramping opportunities nearby. “You can walk the Kepler Track from the town centre if you want to,” he said. “There’s also the small matter of the Routeburn and Milford tracks nearby, and the sort of day and overnight trips, on foot or by kayak, to make most Kiwis salivate with envy.

“Fiordland National park is a huge tramping asset for the town, but there’s also the Mavora Lakes and Takitimu Mountains nearby. What really struck me on my recent visit was the community spirit and the safe environment for bringing up kids.”
