Fiordland hosts a range of activities for the family.
There are many school holiday specials and activity programmes including the Department of Conservation special programme over the summer months.
The Fiordland National Park provides an excellent backdrop for families wanting to explore some of New Zealand's finest scenery and activities.
A good range of accommodation within Te Anau and Manapouri also means that families can enjoy staying in comfort at a budget level to suit their needs. Holiday Parks particularly provide a great base for families with open shared spaces and facilities.
Milford Sound has a very special underwater environment, and you do not have to be a diver to view this!
The vegetation and leaf litter that clings to the steep sides of the Fiord releases tannins that stain the fresh water from the high rainfall that regularly cascades down the walls of the fiord. These tannins make the water a darker colour just like a cup of tea! This combined with the lesser density of the rainwater (to salty water) creates a unique phenomenon whereby the rainwater sits on top of the salty seawater and filters the light to depths below.
