About Hidden Hankinson – Fiordland Outdoors

Discovering the hidden lake

Experience pure, remote Fiordland at its best.

Depart Te Anau downs and take a boat across Lake Te Anau, the South Island's largest lake. Here you will get a feel for how vast Fiordland is. From here, it's a short walk through the native beech forest, don't expect a sealed path, it's a short yet moderate trek through the Fiordland bush as you wind gradually up and back down to the lake. Arrive at the hidden boat shed for your first glimpse of the glacial lake that time forgot, Lake Hankinson.

The second boat will transport you further into Fiordland over Lake Hankinson. Another short walk will lead you to the oldest remaining hut in Fiordland National Park, Hankinson Hut. Built in 1928, this hut is rich in character and history, with adventure stories, deer cullers and those seeking escape taking shelter here.

The clear waters of the Wapiti River flow by, which entices keen anglers, or you may simply take a moment to appreciate the immense ecological system that is Fiordland National Park. Stay for a while and soak in the serenity.

Access to this special location is only available by boat and a short walk, you also will be accompanied by an expert guide.
